You need to be entirely sure about what your desired destination is, but as things change and you encounter hurdles along the way, you must be able to adjust accordingly.
How Do I Form a Goal?
To give an example, you could compare it to the dating world. If you’re starting single and want to find a life partner, that’s your end goal. But saying, “I want to date someone,” is too broad of a goal for you to be successful.
Once you decide you want to start dating in the first place, you need to narrow down what you’re looking for. What kind of things are you looking for in a partner? Not only what they look like, but what their personality is like, what beliefs are important to you that they share, etc.
Those details are the stepping stones to reaching your overall vision, which is to find someone to date. The destination is the ideal person you’d like to find. How you get there is not as important as long as you’re working on it and working toward your goals.
The more detailed you can make your goal, the better; the stepping stones you use to get there aren’t nearly as important. As long as you’re still heading towards the right destination, the road you take to get there isn’t nearly as important. As long as you have goals you’re working towards, you’ll never end up on the wrong track.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what the journey looks like. All you need is that final destination and the smaller goals along the way.
