How do insurance companies define Home Health Care?

Home health care agencies provide services such as equipment rental, visiting doctors and nurses, and in some cases, physical therapists for customers with medical conditions who wish to remain in their homes or cannot leave their homes for treatment and care. Property exposure is that of an office with papers, computers and some storage of items that may be needed by the home health staff. Some items may be stored at employees’ homes due to the need for easy access. All items must be inventoried on a regular basis.

What risk exposure do Home Health Care businesses have?

  • Inland Marine Exposure Florida inland marine exposure includes all equipment that is owned by the agency and is kept off site at the homes or cars of employees. Valuable Papers and Records exposure is a crucial part of the operations because they include all patient records, including doctors’ orders and employee documentation. Computers are used throughout the system. There must be backups of all records which are stored off site. Physicians and Surgeons Coverage should be considered.
  • Crime Exposure Crime exposure is from Florida employee dishonesty of both money and inventory. All ordering, billing and disbursement must be handled by separate individuals. Monitoring must be constant.
  • Premises Liability Premises liability is very limited at the office because it is generally restricted to employees only. The off-premises exposure is extensive as workers will be in Florida patients’ homes. Procedures and policies must be in place for all employees who deal with patients, with pre-employment background checks conducted prior to hiring. A monitoring system must be in place to confirm that policies are being followed and visits are being made.
  • Professional Liability Professional liability exposure is a major exposure. Nurses will receive directions from physicians and should follow approved procedures in all ways. Employees’ backgrounds and certifications must be verified. All licenses must be kept up to date. Employee staff must not perform duties that are outside the area of their expertise. Automobile exposure may be from either Owned or Non-Owned. If owned Florida vehicles are used, all drivers must have a valid driver’s license and their MVRs must be checked on a regular basis. Vehicles must be maintained and records of the maintenance kept at a central location.
  • Workers Compensation Florida workers compensation exposure is primarily off site. Gloves and masks should be worn at all times when working around any bodily fluids as these can transmit diseases. If needles or other sharp objects are used, cuts and puncture wounds are possible. Because of the mobility limitations of many home health care patients, there is also exposure to lifting or supporting patients. The worker must also be able to handle conflicts that may occur during interaction with other family members.
